T.C. Abuja Büyükelçisi Sayın Hakan Çakıl'ın 29 Ekim 2015 Cumhuriyet Bayramı resepsiyonunda yaptığı konuşma
Distinguished Military Attachés,
Members of the Diplomatic Corps,
All Protocols Observed,
Members of the Press,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a great honor and pleasure for us to host such a distinguished community, as we are celebrating the 92nd Anniversary of the founding of our Republic with great pleasure, joy and honor.
92 years ago, Turkish nation led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, waged and won the War of Independence and founded the Republic of Turkey.
I would like to commemorate with deep respect and high appreciation our martyrs who sacrificed their lives for our country and made it possible that today we could proudly celebrate the 92nd Anniversary of the establishment of our Republic.
After establishment of the Republic, the Turkish nation started to build a modern, prosperous, strong and peaceful state and society under the leadership of her great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
After 92 years, Turkey is a democratic and modern country, which upholds the principles of respect to human and social rights, democracy, secularism, pluralism, rule of law and open economy.
Turkey is located at the cross roads of different regions, regimes, civilizations and countries.
Our heritage, social and political harmony, political, economic and social development enable us to steer through the major challenges of our region.
Previous decades’ instability, conflicts and terrorism in our region are unfortunately continuing today with the involvement of actors such as ISIS, PKK, PYD, DHKP-C and others.
Turkey, as a reflection of our long tradition of helping destitute people, welcomed more than 2 million Syrian refugees, escaping from the tragic situation in this country.
There is a genuine and urgent need to address the Middle Eastern issues in a holistic manner, before the region faces more serious problems and challenges.
Turkey assumes responsibility not only in our region, as circumstances dictate, but we also provide humanitarian help to different regions and countries.
Such efforts have made Turkey the largest emerging donor country in comparison with our per capita income.
Turkey pursues a multi-dimensional foreign policy. On one hand, while we strengthen our traditional Trans-Atlantic and European ties, on the other hand we try to deepen our relations with Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia-Pacific regions in several fields.
Turkey’s relations with Africa have been developing speedily during the previous years. Africa has been a priority in our foreign policy.
Turkey has been engaging more in Sub-Saharan countries in recent years.
The number of the Turkish Embassies in Sub-Sahara has risen
The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) has also expanded its presence in Africa.
The Second Turkey-Africa Partnership Summit was held in Equatorial Guinea last year.
Nigeria is a pivotal country for our relations with Sub-Saharan countries.
We consider Nigeria as a strong and strategic partner with great potential.
With this understanding, we encourage Turkish investments in Nigeria, and seek more economic, commercial, cultural and educational ties.
Turkey’s direct investment to Nigeria has been steadily rising.
More than 40 Turkish companies have been operating in Nigeria and brought 410 million US Dollars investment to Nigeria.
In 2014, total trade volume between Turkey and Nigeria was around 2.5 billion US Dollars. With these figures, Nigeria is Turkey’s biggest trade partner in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Embassy will work on to attract more Turkish companies.
Not only our relations, but connections between Turkey and Nigeria are improving. Until December 2013, Turkish Airlines had only direct flights from Istanbul to Lagos.
Today, Turkish Airlines flies to Abuja five days and to Kano four days in a week.
Turkish Airlines has become one of the prominent carriers to Africa with its efforts in recent years. Today, Turkish Airlines flies to 45 destinations in Africa.
We observe tangible, positive results of these direct flights in development of our relations.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Taking this opportunity, I would also like to express that Turkey, which has been suffering from terrorism, supports Nigeria’s struggle against terrorism.
We believe that international and regional cooperation against terrorism is very important to eradicate the terror throughout the world.
Turkey believes Nigeria has enough power and experience to overcome all of her difficulties and challenges.
I would also like to thank all Nigerian authorities, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in facilitating our work of improving and strengthening the relations between our countries.
I also would like to thank;
My colleagues who worked very hard to make this special night a success,
And you once again for being with us at this special day for Turkey and the Turkish nation.
