30 Ağustos Zafer Bayramı Konuşması, 29.08.2014

Representatives of the Honorable Defense Minister, Chief of Staff of Nigerian Armed Forces, Chief of Protocol His Excellency Ambassador Baraja, Director Ambassador Fashano, other Directors from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fellow Ambassadors, Distinguished Military Attachés, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Members of the Press, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to thank you all for being with us here tonight to share our joy and pride, as we celebrate our Victory Day.

This year we commemorate and celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the final battle of our War of Independence led by the commander-in-chief Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

This glorious victory paved the way for the foundation of our modern state one year later. With the new Turkish Republic declared in 1923, the Turkish nation, under the leadership of her great leader Atatürk, started to build a modern, prosperous, strong and peaceful state and society.

This ever vibrant soul has been the driving force of Turkey.

As the heirs of this brave, devoted and self-sacrificing founding generation, we will continue on our path, to realize the aspirations of them and our people.

With these thoughts in mind, today we remember once again with deep gratitude, our great leader Atatürk, his brothers in arms, all heroes and martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation and homeland.

May God bless their souls and may they rest in peace.

Dear Friends,

Today’s event is also special in the sense that we are celebrating it for the first time in our new premises and in the presence of our Military Attaché Staff Colonel Demiray Demirci and his deputy Lieutenant Commander Sertaç Rumelioğlu.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The modern Turkey founded after the Victory Day has been a peaceful, responsible and a constructive member of the international community.

The aphorism of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, “Peace at Home, Peace in the World”, which also welcomes our guests on a placard at the lobby of our Embassy, has always been the basis of Turkish Foreign Policy.

As a country, which suffered a lot from the wars and conflicts, we highly appreciate the value of peace and stability. These two words have become a great longing today in our neighborhood and in the world in general

Under extremely difficult and sensitive conditions, Turkey is doing her best to alleviate the sufferings of the peoples around us, by providing humanitarian assistance and shelter to millions of civilians desperately escaping from conflict and war.

Distinguished Guests,

Taking this opportunity, I would also like to express that Turkey, which suffered from terrorism, supports Nigeria’s struggle against terrorism.

As a country, which has solved many problems during the last decades, Nigeria has enough power and experience to overcome all of her difficulties and challenges.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This year has been special also in the sense that, Barbaros Turkish Maritime Task Group visited many ports around Africa. In this vein, Turkish Navy Ship Oruçreis, a member of Barbaros Turkish Maritime Task Group, performed a visit to the Port of Lagos between 16 and 19 April. The Commander of South Sea Area of Turkey, Vice Admiral Hasan Uşaklıoğlu’s visit to Nigeria during the same period has been a landmark in Turkish-Nigerian relations. These visits gave us an opportunity to further develop the cordial relations between our two friendly countries and peoples.

You may watch details of Barbaros Turkish Maritime Task Group’s visits from the video after my speech.

I also would like to thank my colleagues who worked very hard to make this special night a success.

I would like to thank you once again for being with us at this special day for Turkey and the Turkish nation. I hope you would enjoy the company and our cuisine.

Thank you!
